Lucia is a Christmas tradition that sits close to many Scandinavians hearts (and others). It honors St. Lucia, a Christian martyr from Sicily, who is associated with light and hope. The celebration marks the beginning of the Christmas season and is a way to bring light and warmth into the long, dark Scandinavian winter.
The tradition is celebrated with a procession where young girls and boys walk in white robes, carrying lights while singing "Sankta Lucia", a humn in which many Scandinavians know by heart.
Choir song by the Norwegian School.
